Celebrating our 10th anniversary, the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra presents Saxophone Spectrum, music from the first saxophone ensemble music to the latest saxophone orchestra work by Mark Knippel. This is SSO’s only concert this season at SOU. Also on the program is SOU’s prize winning saxophone Quartet New Specs!
Congratulations to the SOU New Specs Quartet for taking Second place at the Second Yamaha Chengdu International Saxophone Competition in China. During Christmas break from school Hope Erickson, Zachary Yuyang, Jax Chenxi and Jayce Gao traveled to the Sichuan Conservatory to compete in the final two rounds of the competition. After two days and two rounds of performing the New Specs earned second place in the professional division of the competition.

After five years Rhett Bender’s quartet the Globe will return for a week residency November 16-20 in Southern Oregon. Originally named the Athens Quartet Bender, Jennifer Turpen, John Bleuel and Scott Turpen first began performing together in 1994 as graduate students of saxophone professor Dr. Kenneth Fischer at the University of Georgia. Globe has visit the Rogue Valley five times as faculty for the summer Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop but has never visited during the school year. From Nov 16-20 Globe will be visiting Jacksonville Elementary, Central Point Middle School, North Medford High School and Southern Oregon University as part of a chamber music residency co-sponsored by Britt Festivals and the Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU
Globe will be performing two Concerts November 19 at SOU Music Recital and November 20 at Bigham Knoll in Jacksonville. Both concerts are at 7:30PM and will feature slightly different music. Both will feature music by Southern Oregon composers TODD BARTON and MARK KNIPPEL as well as music from around the world. Music Recital Hall. $10 regular, $5 senior, free to full-time students.

In June the New Specs Quartet: Jayce Gaodongyue, soprano; Jax Chenxi, alto, Zachary Yuyang, tenor and Hope Erickson, baritone submitted a video entry to for the preliminary round of the 2nd Chengdu Yamaha Saxophone International Quartet Contest. With the aim of promoting the careers of saxophone and chamber music, finding and cultivating the outstanding saxophone players, Sichuan Saxophone Association hosts this International Saxophone Contest.
In August New Specs were invited to compete in the semi-final round this December in Chengdu, China! The quartet has already begun raising approximately $6000 for their musical adventure in China. If you would like to contribute please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
